C'mon Texas. Get it Together. People are Watching.

The world is watching to see what ridiculous thing Texas will do next. Texas acquired 94,700 signatures on its petition to secede from the United States one week after President Obama was re-elected by an overwhelming majority to serve a second term.  I don't profess to have my pulse on what everyone in Texas is doing, but I don't know anyone who signed the petition.  And... I don't know anyone who knows anyone who signed it.

Yet, I have to endure the constant jokes about the things things we Texans do.  Yes, I said "we".  Texas  is my home and I love almost everything about living  here.  I have to bear the good with the bad.  We all have those friends or family members that do things to embarrass us.  We don't disown them.  We simply shake our heads and say, "Well, you know Ronnie's not right in the head".

Right now, Texas is America's "Ronnie".

The longest serving judge in the state, a criminal court judge, has an active warrant for his arrest. The warrant was issued because of a traffic ticket. Judge Lawrence Meyers refused to pay his fine because he didn't think the fee/punishment fit the crime. Really Judge Meyers???  We all have the right to appeal our cases if we feel the punishment is not appropriate, but... I  wonder how many criminals have been sentenced in his court and felt the punishment didn't fit the crime.  This story made the national news.  C'mon Texas. People are watching us.

People in other states generalize and assume we are all in agreement with the shenanigans going on here.  Let me assure you we are not.   Austin, Texas currently has 9,000 signatures on a petition to allow them to remain a part of the United States if Texas is successful in its bid to secede.

Texas is notorious for its hurricanes and floods.  The next time the hurricanes and flood waters come to Texas I wonder if any of the people who signed that petition to secede will accept help from FEMA?

We try our best to keep "Ronnie" under control, but you sometimes "Ronnie" goes rogue.  People are watching Texas.  Let's get it together.

Family....

On the last episode of This Woman’s Words Radio we talked about family.  We’ve heard from our listeners. They want more.  We received feedback offline about the content and guests of the show.  Our listeners loved what both of our guests shared about their own unique stories.  Bo, an African American male, was raised in a single family home to a mother who worked long hours and went to school to support the family.  Marybelle, a Colombian American was raised in a deeply religious, traditional Spanish home.  She was raised with both parents, most of the time. There were times when her father was away from the family.

Our listeners want to hear from other families.  We know that families are born by both DNA and by LOVE.  In today’s show, we will talk about blended families, LGBT families, and adopted families.  In America and beyond, there are untold possibilities as to how a family is formed.  Let’s talk about it.

On last week’s show both guests shared how their family of origin shaped them to be the persons they are today.  Both are now married with two children.  Bo has started his own family traditions, inviting family and friends to share in every holiday.  Each holiday is filled with lots food, family and fun.  Marybelle continues holiday traditions she learned from her family.  Everyone gathers, everyone cooks, and the matriarch, her mother oversees the roasting of the family Thanksgiving turkey.

This Woman’sWords would love to hear your comments.

President Obama Wins!

After all of the divisiveness we've seen in this presidential campaign, we did it! After all of the millions of dollars spent by a handful of millionaires, it wasn't enough.  Ultimately their millions could not make up for the fact that the candidate the Republicans chose just was not what America wants or needs.

It is time now for Democrats and Republicans to find a way to work together. Mitch McConnell was unsuccessful in his goal of making sure that President Obama was a one term president. The voting public has said overwhelmingly that we are tired of the gridlock.  Perhaps the outcome of this election will cause both sides to understand that voters expect them to work together.  We have grown weary of having America suffer economically and socially because of an agenda that has little to do with doing what is best for America.  America voted not only for what is good for the individual, but for what is good for the country.  As Bruce Springsteen says, "We take care of our own".

America is changing.  The Republican party has  had their heads stuck in the sand or in the 1950's or some other blind spot.  They are in denial about our current America. The middle class is expanding.  Latinos, African-Americans, women, the LGBT community, the 47%, the Occupy groups across the nation can no longer be ignored.  As a nation we are more politically aware now than at any time besides the civil rights era.  For many people, President Obama's policies are very closely aligned with their own personal policies.  For others who voted for President Obama, they simply were afraid of what would happen under a Romney administration.

I am proud to be an American. Voting matters. Let's move FORWARD!

As always your comments are welcome and encouraged.

No Vote, No Voice

I waited in line. I voted. I have a voice. I used it.
I was told at an early age..."If you don't exercise your right to vote you don't have a right to voice your opinion about the outcome".

Expect to hear my voice as we move forward in the next four years.
